First of all, the bachelor certificate verification is no longer the same process as it used to be, the same one many of you knew before. Secondly, Imma has now made it official that students in certain vocational schools can request a residence permit. Yes, through certified professional schools. And thirdly, I need to warn you about a viral claim that you can simply come to Portugal on a tourist visa and switch easily because there are risks people are not telling you.

1.1 The New Bachelor’s Certificate Verification Process

The very first thing is the bachelor’s verification, which has changed recently. Previously, many applicants would process their bachelor’s verification through the Nigerian university regulatory route, which is the NUC. So now you don’t verify through the NUC anymore, okay? And for many people that stage was either free or even much less costly.

But now applicants have reportedly mentioned that the process has changed. Okay, it has changed and it is now being handled more like the verification route often used for embassy processing. So the embassy verifies the documents with the legal route themselves, okay? For example, they go through the assigned legal consular handling.

According to what many applicants are reporting based on the pricing or the cost, some Southwest applicants are paying around 200,000 naira for those of you in Nigeria. Some south, south, and southeast applicants report higher amounts, and in some cases they said it went as high as about 350. Now, it depends on the state and the processing route.

Please listen carefully. Before you pay anybody, verify directly with the school, the embassy requirements, your admission institution in Portugal, and, of course, the trusted legal channels because it has to be done directly by the embassy now, okay? Now, let me be clear. This does not mean any random school can give you residency. They can’t give you residency. It means the school must be properly certified, okay? You have to make sure and ensure that the school you’re applying for is DGERT certified, okay? Check the official registration status to see whether the school qualifies under the professional education framework. Because if the school is not recognized, AIMA can disregard the request, okay?

And you know, this is where many people make mistakes. They see a cheap vocational school, and then you think it is an automatic residence permit because of the new update. That is not how things work. Now, school legitimacy matters in this case. So, make sure that you verify that the school is registered.

1.3 The Tourist Visa to Student Route: Debunking Viral Claims

Now, the third update is the tourist visa to student route. Now, let me address the controversial advice all over the internet, okay? That says just come on a tourist visa, and you can easily switch in Portugal. Yes, there are reports of pathways being used, but here is what people don’t tell you.

1.3.1 Five Critical Risks of the Tourist Visa Pathway

• Risk Number 1: No guarantee of appointment speed. Yeah. Now, I’ll break this all when I’m done.

• Risk Number 2: The policy interpretation can change.

• Risk Number 3: If your school is a problematic one, you could be stuck and nobody’s coming to save you.

• Risk Number 4: Accommodation, the funds, and even legal stay issues can become serious if care is not taken.

• Risk Number 5: This route can be far more expensive than applying correctly from home.

So, please do not queue your entire migration plan on just a random viral update, okay?

1.3.2 Realities and Hidden Costs of Coming as a Tourist

Another update many people ignore is about students already in Portugal who have not completed studies or are working; they may have pathways to regularize under other legal provisions depending on circumstances, okay? I mean, this matters because many people think once your study plan changes, your case is over. Not always, okay?

Another thing is you should expect more scrutiny on proof of accommodation now, tuition payment, evidence of attendance in class, criminal record, your authentication, and of course document naming and digital submissions, and also keep your AIMA records updated. Documentation mistakes are also delaying people more than people realize.

So, my honest warning in 2026 is don’t choose Portugal based only on cheap tuition or easy residency promises in viral immigration content. Choose based on real school quality, legal route, budget for document changes, housing realities, and long-term residence strategy. Portugal can still be a good option, but misinformation is expensive.

Now, a lot of people are conquering Portugal. Yes, it’s a very good country, obviously, but things are changing and things have been updated regularly, especially when it comes to the residency pathway. So, if you are currently preparing Portugal study documents, make sure that everything is in line with the current update for 2026. Okay?

Think about you spending a whole million, okay, in naira, whatever country you’re coming from, as a tourist in Portugal. Now, what is the guarantee that you get to Portugal and you are not even provided the residency? Or what is even the guarantee that you come and the school that you are willing to apply for gives you admission?

Let me give you a scenario. For instance, obviously, you are seeing all the whole information about switching easily with a tourist visa. Now, you’ve spent a whole lot of money, you get to Portugal on a tourist visa, and then you contact the vocational school, and you make a mistake. It is not DGERT certified, or the school doesn’t have the required documentation that enables you to apply for residency. It becomes an issue, and then you get stuck. And you would have to pay. The truth is, you spent money already on your tourist visa. And when you come for vocational school, you also pay an application fee. You also pay your tuition fee. It is not free of charge. So, imagine all the expenses that go along with it.

So, for me, if you ask my honest opinion, I think this route benefits people that are already in Portugal.

1.4 Planning Beyond the Classroom: Survival and Long-Term Strategy

And I also want to—yeah, I just remember this. There is a new update now that says, as a student in Portugal, it’s obviously not a new update. Most of you already know. But based on the details that we all know about the situation of jobs and even the language barrier in Portugal, you already know that, okay? Take an instance where you even got the visa or the residency. For a tourist visa to Portugal, you get residency through vocational school. And after the vocational school, what next? These are the plans that you should be making. It is not just about coming to Portugal. What happens next? Okay, after vocational school, are you thinking about a long-term stay? How will you renew your residency? That is what matters. It is not about that time.

So, most of these vocational schools are 1 year, and so it is mostly 15 months. So, a 1-year and then 3-month internship. If you’re lucky, you get a job. And if you’re unlucky, you might not even get a job. Now, for you to renew your residency, you must have a job. Something must be keeping you in the country. Either you have a job or you are currently schooling. So, what happens after your schooling with the vocational training thing and then you don’t get a job? How are you going to renew? How will you even survive in the country? How do you pay your rent? How do you pay for your feeding? These are the things you should consider before making any move.

Now, I’m here because I don’t want to. Even though we come here to make online videos and all that, it’s just for you to be prepared, okay? Yeah, everybody wants to want to travel for, of course, better education and all that. It’s, it’s okay. But before making that move, sit down, make your calculations, and check: is it really worth it? Do you have the finances? That is very important, okay? You have to prepare your mind for the fact that the job is not easy. And most of the time, you can’t even be attending a vocational school and be working at the same time. If that’s your plan, it will not work because attendance is also very important to even get whatever you want to apply for.

1.5 The Secret to Navigating AIMA Appointments

Because let me give you this secret. Let’s say you come to Portugal, okay? I want to tell you all this secret. Now, you already arrived with a tourist visa to Portugal, and you found a vocational school; definitely I’m happy for you. You found one. And they said, “Okay, of course, we are willing to help you with the application process, but you have to remember that getting an appointment nowadays with AIMA means you have to wait. You have to learn patience.”

Now, let’s say school has started; you have to be going to classes, obviously. All you are doing is you just have to wait for an appointment. Now, you’ve already said that you’re going for classes at the vocational school, and you now said, “I’m giving you an instance.” You now said, “Oh, I mean, I think I can just get a job because of this and that.” How will you cope?

So, you have to prepare your mind because if you are not going for classes and you go for your appointment for your residency after you’ve gotten an appointment, you will not get the residence permit. I’m telling you the honest truth. See, don’t let anybody deceive you. It is not about wasting your money. If you know that you will not go to school. If you know that you don’t have the finances to go for that vocational school fully, at least complete the one year. Don’t even bother trying it. Look for normal routes like the normal bachelor’s if you know you don’t have the finances. If you know that your plan is to study while you are doing it. And moreover, work while you’re studying. You have to be aware that residency comes with proof of accommodation, proof of funds, and proof of attendance in class.
